Pulkovo launches automated document check system for boarding

Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg has been equipped with a fully import-substituted automated document check system for passengers boarding domestic flights. According to the airport's press service, the devices are currently installed at two departure gates and are expected to be deployed at all gates in the departures lounge by the end of the year.
Thanks to this technology, passengers can now board their flights independently by scanning a boarding pass or a QR code on their mobile device. "The installation of automated turnstiles is part of the project to create a 'seamless' environment for passengers at Pulkovo Airport. It aims to increase the speed of pre-flight procedures through the automation of certain processes," the press service quotes Pavel Kushnirenko, Director of Ground Handling at Northern Capital Gateway (the airport's operator). According to him, the time spent on servicing passengers awaiting boarding will be reduced by 25%.

The electronic turnstiles installed at Pulkovo are manufactured by the Russian company "ELSI" in collaboration with the Iskander Group. Integrated into the devices is the "Special Control" mobile boarding pass system, developed by "Neolabs". After a passenger passes through the turnstile, the airport agent receives all the necessary information about them.

Earlier this year, Pulkovo also decided to expedite pre-flight security screening for business class passengers and holders of premium-level Gold and Platinum airline bonus cards on domestic flights. To do so, passengers need to present their boarding pass (electronic or paper) along with their passport at the first document check point before proceeding to security screening. It is expected that this privilege will eventually be extended to economy class passengers as well.
